Academic Profile
The School
York Country Day School (YCDS) is a co-educational, independent, non-denominational college prep school founded in 1953. Since 1976 the school has been affiliated with York College of Pennsylvania. Located on a 17-acre campus in suburban York, Pennsylvania, the school has 20 regular classrooms, 4 science Laboratories, 3 Libraries, 1 Computer Lab, 1 Music Studio, 2 Art Studios, 1 Dining/Multipurpose Room, 1 full-sized gymnasium, 3 playing fields, and 3 tennis courts.
Enrollment
We enroll 214 students, in four divisions, PreSchool-12, from 22 school districts in York, Adams, Harford, and Baltimore (MD) counties. There are 61 students in the Upper School, 25% of whom receive need-based financial aid. Our school, which is committed to diversity, is currently 16% multicultural. The average class size is 11 students, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 6:1.
Faculty
Our faculty is comprised of 29 full-time teaching faculty members and 6 part-time teaching faculty members. Fifteen faculty members hold Master’s Degrees or above.
School Calendar
The School operates on a semester system. School begins on August 30, 2007. The Class of 2008 will graduate on June 13, 2008.
Community Service
Students must accrue a minimum of 20 hours of service each year in grades 9 - 11, plus 30 hours service during their senior year.
Upper School Academic Program
Graduation Requirements: A minimum of 20 credits is required for graduation and must include 4 years of English, 3 years of mathematics, 3 years of history, 3 consecutive years of French or Spanish, 3 years of science, including at least two lab sciences and 3 semesters in the Magnet Program. Physical Education or team sports are required every year.
All students are required to take at least five one-credit courses per year. 9th graders are required to take a semester of fine or performing arts. Students in grades 10-12 may elect one or more additional courses from among the electives that are offered each year.
The Magnet Program allows students to work closely with teachers to pursue in-depth, academic explorations in the areas of Humanities/Writing; Math/Science/Technology; Visual Art; and Performing Arts. The particular course of study is generated from the student’s interests and builds upon the foundation of knowledge in the particular field of study. Teachers work with students to create Individual Curriculum Magnet Plans that direct each student’s course of study and exploration.
Seniors take a minimum of five one-credit courses. They are required to take at least one and up to three courses per semester at York College of Pennsylvania as a dual enrollment. The Upper School operates on a 5-day rotation schedule. Full credit courses meet at least four times per rotation for 50 minutes each session.
Advanced Placement: We offer AP courses in Biology, Calculus AB, Statistics, Chemistry, English Literature, French Language, Spanish Language and Literature, World History, US History, Music Theory and Studio Art. AP Science courses are offered on a rotating basis. 07-08 AP courses offered: Chemistry, English Literature, French Language, World History, US History and Studio Art.
York Country Day School does not use a weighted grade system. We do not rank our students.
