Q: Can a YCDS student play a sport for their local public school district if YCDS doesn't offer it?
A: Yes! If your student wants to play a sport that York Country Day School does not currently sponsor, they are now eligible to try out and participate for the public school district where your family resides (your district of residence).
Please note: This only applies if the sport is completely unavailable to our students. If YCDS offers the sport directly, or if it is available to our students through our athletic partnership with York Tech, the student must play for the YCDS or York Tech team and is not eligible to play for their home district.
Q: Does this new ruling apply to Middle School/Junior High students as well?
A: Yes. This policy applies equally to all PIAA member schools and covers students in 7th, 8th, and 9th grades, in addition to high school athletes.
Please note: Our athletic partnership with York Tech only applies to High School sports. Because York Tech does not offer Middle School sports, our 7th and 8th graders are fully eligible to play any sport for their home district that YCDS does not sponsor directly. You can see a full breakdown of which sports are offered at each grade level in the chart above.
Q: Are YCDS students required to adhere to the public school district’s eligibility regulations regarding academics, attendance, and conduct?
A: Yes. Under PIAA regulations, private school students participating in a public school's athletic program must fully comply with all state and local school district eligibility standards. While competing, the student is subject to the host district’s policies regarding academic performance, attendance requirements, and student code of conduct. Failure to meet these dual standards may result in a loss of athletic eligibility.
